I had a telephone consultation with the mental health team yesterday and was so pleased that it was Dr Chan taking the appointment. I have not seen him for sometime. My mood was suddenly boosted as he is so helpful. He listens carefully and is very understanding. I have, since last having a consultation with Dr Chan, been kept on a maintenance dose of medication, with the impression I will never improve. Over the years Dr Chan has tried getting my medication to work for me, but I am very intolerant to nearly anything. His arsenal (as he calls it) didn't give the correct fit for my illness. However yesterday he has found a new approach which we are going to trial. Dr Chan is very thorough, conscientious and personable. He is a gentleman through and through and I count myself very lucky to have him looking after my mental health. He goes way beyond what is expected and I thank him for that.

I was so very fortunate to be seen by Dr Chan recently. I don't find it easy to talk about my feelings but with Dr Chan it felt like talking to a trusted family member. He is a lovely gentle soul with great compassion and empathy. I don't know how he could improve or give greater care than he already does. I wish every Doctor could be this amazing.

I was concerned that I might be getting symptoms of Alzheimers because my memory was getting really bad and I was referred to Dr Chan by my GP. I was expecting to be treated a bit like an idiot by someone who offered the same standard advice about exercise and diet, which would have been useless. None of it! Dr Chan is a proper psychiatrist who knows is stuff. He seemed interested in my condition and spoke very clearly, which was important to me because of my deafness. I was relieved to find that my symptoms were a better fit to ageing rather than dementure and that I had a less than 10% chance of developing Alzheimers. This was particularly welcome news as I am also undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and deafness. For people who want to be treated like an intelligent human being by a very likeable knowledgeable and professional one, I can't recommend him highly enough.

Dr Chan was very knowledgeable and explained the illness very well, He was very patient, and pleasant. I really trusted him. Constructive suggestion - I know how busy this department is, but another appointment in about a year's time, even with a lower member of the team to keep a check on progress would have been nice.

This Doctor is a shining example of the NHS at its very best. I have had reason to contact him on occasion in relation to treatment of a relative with dementia, he always responds and does so very quickly, he is polite, professional, caring and an excellent clinician. He takes great pains during consultations to put patients and relatives at their ease so that he can gently mine the information that he needs. He is proactive in phoning up patients, relatives and will make domiciliary visits if appropriate. His approach is as far as it is possible to imagine from the pompous and incompetent Consultants of yesteryear. If it was possible to bottle essence of Chan and infuse this into other medics we'd have a model health service!
